Gender Equality Commission to get to bottom of Maiden Bursary scheme … after she awarded bursaries to 16 girls based partly on their virginity.

The Commission for Gender Equality says it will work closely with all parties involved in the controversial Maiden Bursary scheme.

The commission says it received complaints from political parties and some members of the public who believe that the scheme is discriminatory.

The commission met the Mayor of the uThukela Municipality, Dudu Mazibuko, after she awarded bursaries to 16 girls based partly on their virginity.

Chairperson for the commission Mfanozelwe Shozi says the probe is aimed at addressing the matter.

“As a commission we feel that is important for us to investigate this matter so that we are able to get to the bottom of it.┬áThis way we will be able to provide recommendations and findings that will assist both South Africans as well as district municipalities,” he said.
