WHO WE ARE
Anglo American is one of the world’s largest mining companies. With 76,000 permanent employees and 24,240 contractors in South Africa, we are the country’s largest private sector employer.
Our long and storied history dates back to 1917 and the drive and determination of one man, Sir Ernest Oppenheimer. He saw the opportunity to capitalise on a region that was beginning to explode on to the global mining scene. Our strong South African heritage forms the roots for our global business, now operating in the Americas, Australia, Southern Africa and Europe.
Anglo American’s Chairman’s Fund is one of the dedicated instruments through which Anglo American channels its corporate social investment (CSI) spend, and was named the top CSI grant-maker in South Africa for eight consecutive years.
As the oldest professionally managed CSI programme in the country, the fund dates back to the 1950s and, over the years, has developed a reputation for being one of the most inclusive funders in the country and a partner of choice in development.
These range from small grassroots initiatives to major capital building projects and large-scale service delivery programmes in partnership with provincial and national authorities. Focus areas include HIV/AIDS, healthcare and welfare as well as education and entrepreneurial development.
Anglo Coal bursaries are offered to students who intend pursuing their tertiary education in any of South African universities. These bursaries are offered under Anglo American.
