The SAMA Medical Student Bursaries

Health Sector Education and Training Authority

The Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) was one of the original 23 SETAs established by law in South Africa in 1998, and it has, like all the rest, been operating for the past ten years.

The SA Medication Association is offering two medical education bursaries per annum which is intended to support South African citizens who live in South Africa and attending medical school in South Africa. The bursaries will only be used to fund study in the medical field i.e. pre-graduate studies towards a MBChB or equivalent degree.

  • A pre-graduate bursary in the amount of R20,000 will be offered per annum from the first to the fourth year of study and will be paid into the student’s account at the University.  The bursary will be non-exclusive (i.e. if the student obtains additional bursaries, this bursary will continue).
  • It is envisioned that the continuation of this bursary will be conditional upon the continued pass rate of the student, and will terminate should the student fail.
  • An additional pre-graduate bursary in the amount of R20 000 will be offered to a deserving student, who is already studying towards a MBChB or equivalent degree, and has good academic records, but finds that due to financial pressures he/ she may be unable to continue his/ her studies.  The bursary will be paid into the student’s account at the University.  The bursary will be non-exclusive (i.e. if the student obtains additional bursaries, this bursary will continue).
  • It is envisioned that the continuation of this bursary will be conditional upon the continued pass rate of the student, and will terminate should the student fail.  If a suitable candidate was not found, the second bursary will also be offered to a first year student.
  • A person who has been selected to receive the bursary and who subsequently takes leave from medical school will be permitted to continue receiving the bursary provided that the person continues to meet eligibility criteria and academic achievement standards. The bursary will not be paid during a period of leave of absence from school.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Only SA citizens will qualify.
  • Historically disadvantaged groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Copy of letter of acceptance into an approved South African medical education program. This can be conditional pending final acceptance.
  • Individuals who are presently in medical school programs in South Africa who meet eligibility criteria may apply for the bursary for the period remaining in their education.
  • Scholarship-holders are allowed to hold supplementary bursaries, grants or emoluments with unlimited values.
  • If the applicant does receive supplementary funding during the duration of the scholarship, this will need to be declared to the SAMA Bursary Committee

Selection Criteria

Applications are assessed based on potential and academic performance:

From the eligible applicants, two new students each year will be approved according to their ability to meet the following selection criteria:

  • Academic merit
  • Potential for excellence for those belonging to historically disadvantaged groups
  • Leadership qualities
  • Previous prizes and awards
  • Recommendation of referees

Method of payment

  • Payment will be made directly to the medical school at the University.
  • Once approved for a bursary, a medical student will be paid the full amount of the bursary in January of each year or as soon as possible thereafter.
  • Payment for the second and subsequent years of study will be made only after submitting proof of successful completion of the previous year of study and proof of enrollment in the next sequential year of study.

Applications are only accepted between 1 August and 30 September each year.

Completed applications must be in English and must be received before or on 30 September of the relevant year.

Applications must include: 

  • Full name, address, telephone and email contact information
  • Copies of documents to demonstrate South African citizenship (e.g. copy of ID or passport photograph page, birth or citizenship certificate).
  • A resume outlining education and volunteer experience. Maximum length – 2 pages.
  • Copy of letter of acceptance to a South African medical school.

Chilean President announces new Mandela scholarships

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet Jeria says she has put a proposal to her
government to avail 50 scholarships & bursary application, to students in South Africa and other African countries to pursue their master?s degrees at a top university in Chile.

Briefing journalists after delivering the Annual Nelson Mandela Lecture in Cape
Town, President Bachelet said the awarding of the scholarships would be done in
honour of the late President.

The President said Tata, who affectionately became known by his clan name
Madiba, was her role model growing up.

“[President] Nelson Mandela has been a leader who inspired me all of my life. So
for me, this is very special.

“But also, as I said in the lecture, he has taught us so much. I have learnt so
much from him.

“So that is why . in 2015, we are going to have 50 Nelson Mandela scholarships & bursary applications
. to go study at the University of Chile,’ she said.

She said that upon approval by the Chilean Congress, the scholarships would
fund deserving students who want to pursue master?s degrees in the fields of
farming, mining and astronomy, among others.

Her announcement comes after her meeting with President Jacob Zuma at the
Union Buildings on Friday, where the two identified sectors in their respective
economies to work together to boost economic growth.

Among several opportunities that the two Presidents identified as areas of
cooperation are energy, defence, science and technology, trade and investment,
mineral resources, social development and environmental issues.

Chile expressed interest in South Africa?s Energy Master Plan and the Square
Kilometre Array (SKA) project – the world?s largest radio telescope.

This is in light of South Africa and Chile being two leading countries in astronomy
research.

Chile to build a Mandela memorial

President Bachelet said to further honour Tata Madiba, her country would build a
sculpture at a park in Santiago, the capital of Chile.

“.We will build a sculpture at a beautiful park in Santiago, where so many people
[walk by] so they can learn about Nelson Mandela and be inspired by him,’ she said.

She said she was honoured to have been invited to come to South Africa to
deliver the 12th Annual Nelson Mandela Lecture.

The President said in turn, she had extended an invitation to the Nelson Mandela
Foundation to go to Chile for a South-South dialogue to share experiences on
challenges related to social cohesion, from inequalities to wide-ranging issues of
diversity – be it cultural or sexual diversity.

Delivering her lecture earlier, the President spoke of how Tata inspired not only
South Africans, but the rest of the world when he chose nation building through
reconciliation after spending many years in jail.

She said while social cohesion included dealing with poverty, cultural differences
and inequalities, she said the strongest weapon to forge national unity was through
the state holding extensive consultations with its people.

She said this included, among others, consulting people not only on
implementation of programmes, but also on the decisions that precede policy or
legislation changes or drafting.

The President also said that her government was currently consulting people on
creating a new ministry for indigenous groups to get their input on how they want
their country to be run in a bid to promote social cohesion.

She said President Mandela also told the world that education remained the most
crucial intervention for social cohesion.

 

Social Work Scholarships Available for Study Next Year

Applications for 2015 scholarships are open for social work students and matriculants who are planning to enrol for a social work degree at university next year. So if you aspire to become a social worker, and you need some kind of bursary to get you through your studies, then don’t miss this opportunity. The closing date for applications is October 31, 2014.

Social Work is a Calling

One of the most important notifications in the social work Scholarship for Social Work Student Guide 2015 released by the National Department of Social Development, as programme manager of the Scholarship Programme, Moqeloa Mothopeng, points out, is that social work is a calling rather than just a profession. For this reason the department only want students who “REALLY want to pursue this noble profession” to apply for the social work scholarships that are currently available.

They stress that they really do want people who are “very passionate” about social work to apply. They also stress that they want students who will be happy to help in disadvantaged communities, “with all their problems regardless where they are.” Most of these communities are, nor surprisingly, in rural areas.

The social work profession falls under the SsdSETA that was established to incorporate all welfare-related sub-sectors in 2011. This makes it one of the newer SETAs in South Africa, representing the welfare sector that was previously part of a broader body, the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA).

What Social Work Scholarships Cover

The scholarships on offer for 2015 will cover registration costs, tuition fees, cost of books prescribed for the courses, and stipends for practical exams. If accommodation is provided by the applicants’ universities of choice, accommodation costs might be included in the scholarship.

The Department has a very clear policy in terms of how and when they pay. For example, when learners who get social work scholarships buy books, each and every item needs to be specified. Only prescribed books and other study material will be covered. They also only pay out “appropriate expenses” and will not ever pay students money that could have, but hasn’t, been used. Full study fees are paid after April in the relevant year (in this case April 2015).

The Departmental guide also draws attention to the fact that successful applicants cannot change their field of study once they have been accepted.

Important Details Required

In general, those who are applying for social work scholarships must be SA citizens and be happy to enter into an agreement with the Department. That’s about it… though of course all the necessary paperwork must be supplied – certified copies of Matric results, ID document, parent or guardian’s proof of income, academic record to date, and so on – and all entry requirements from the university must be complied with. All requirements are clearly laid out by the Department of Social Development.

Admission to University

Even though students are applying for scholarships, the Department emphasizes that it is imperative for them to apply to their university of choice for admission in due time. To help they have given a full list of relevant institutions throughout the country, together with names, contact details, and email information of heads of departments.

They have also provided information that will help prospective applicants get more information from provincial representatives in every province.

Birmingham Lloyds Scholarship programme 2014

The University of Birmingham is proud to announce its involvement in the award-winning Lloyds Scholars programme for the upcoming 2013/14 academic year. Along with seven other leading universities across the UK, the University of Birmingham will partner with the Lloyds Banking Group to offer students from lower household incomes a complete package of financial support, paid internships and the opportunity to develop their employability skills.

In order to apply to the Lloyds Scholars programme you must:

  • be a UK resident or an EU student currently residing in the UK
  • have a confirmed offer of a place to study at the University of Birmingham, having made the University your first-choice
  • be commencing the first year of a full-time three or four year undergraduate degree in 2013/14
  • have an assessed household income of less than £25,000

What does the Lloyds Scholars programme offer?

If you are successful in becoming a Lloyds Scholar, you will receive a full package of support, which will include:

  • annual bursaries to help with living costs and study materials
  • performance-related cash awards each year for good grades

How many places are available and how can I apply?

Fifteen places are available for first year students at the University of Birmingham for the 2013/14 academic year. To be considered as a potential Lloyds Scholar you must complete a series of tests, including an online numeracy test, a telephone interview and, if you are successful, an Assessment Centre.

If your household income is below £36,000, you will be entitled to additional financial support from the University in the form of a Chamberlain Bursary. Please note that this page provides details on the arrangements for the 2013/14 academic year.

Am I eligible for a Chamberlain Bursary?

In order to be eligible you must:

  • be a UK-resident student undertaking a first undergraduate degree in September 2013;
  • be liable for the full standard undergraduate fee (£9,000);
  • not be on an NHS-funded programme;
  • not be on an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme;
  • not be progressing from a foundation degree;
  • not be transferring from another institution;
  • have a household income of £36,000 or less (as verified by the relevant Student Loans Company agency);

The Chamberlain Bursary will be subject to annual reassessment to determine eligibility.

What does the Chamberlain Bursary offer?

At Birmingham we recognise the importance of the full residential experience and therefore if you are from a priority group you will receive an accommodation discount up to the value of £4,750 if you choose to live in University-owned properties and complete an application form by the University deadline of 31 May 2013.

Please note: The application deadline for priority group students wishing to reside in University accommodation has now passed. If you have missed this deadline you will now be assessed on your household income.

If you do not fall into a priority group but have an assessed household income below £36,000, you will receive support in the form of a cash bursary (an additional £2,000 fee reduction is available for students with a household income of less than £16,190).

Please note that EU students will only be able to claim this award as a fee reduction.

If you are in receipt of a Chamberlain Bursary for your year of entry, you may also qualify for an award from your School or College depending on your choice of subject.

Am I in a priority group?

Priority for a Chamberlain Bursary will be offered to:

  • care leavers
  • independent students who are in receipt of selected state benefits*
  • students whose parents/carers are in receipt of selected state benefits*

* Benefits include Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Child Tax Credit (without Working Tax Credit), Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit or Support under Part VI of the
Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.

How do I apply?

If you do not fall into a priority group, you will not need to make an application. Provided you have consented to share your information on your Student Finance application we will assess you automatically based on your household income and will send an award notification letter to your home address.

The application deadline for priority group students wishing to reside in University accommodation was 31 May 2013; unfortunately we cannot accept any further applications beyond this date. If you have missed this deadline you will now be assessed based on your household income.

When will I be paid?

If you qualify for the cash bursary, payment will be made in two equal instalments, one on 31 January and one on 2 May 2014. Payment will be made directly into the bank account you have nominated for your Maintenance Loan or Grant.

If you qualify for either a tuition/accommodation fee reduction, instructions will be included in your award letter.

What will I receive in subsequent years?

Eligible students will continue to receive their award (subject to annual reassessment of entitlement).

Birmingham’s musical heritage reaches back to our first Professor of Music, Edward Elgar. Today, both the new Bramall Music Building and the Barber Institute host regular public performances from our two orchestras, choirs, bands and other music ensembles. In recognition of this legacy, the University of Birmingham will be offering 36 new Music Scholarships to new undergraduates in September 2013.

Am I eligible to apply?

In order to be considered for a scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a UK or EU student liable for the full standard undergraduate fee (£9,000).
  • You must have an offer of a place on a full-time undergraduate programme (other than a programme offered by the Department of Music) at the University of Birmingham, starting in September 2013.
  • You must have achieved grade 8 in instrumental or vocal studies.

What does the scholarship offer?

Each  scholarship  will offer a £1,000 cash award which will be tenable for three years, subject to satisfactory academic progression at a 2:1 standard.

How can I apply?

This scheme is now closed for the 2013/14 academic year. Applications will reopen for 2014/15 in October.

Selection of these awards will be based on the standard of grade 8 qualification and academic potential. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of following confirmation of A Levels results in August. Successful applicants are encouraged to perform in at least one ensemble and/or chamber ensemble organised by the University Music Society and Department of Music.

Harvard University Fellowship 2014

Harvard University – Frank Knox Memorial Fellowships – 2013/2014

Up to three (3) Frank Knox Memorial Fellowships will be awarded to students from Australia for graduate study at Harvard University in academic year 2013-2014.

Fellowship Overview

The Frank Knox Memorial Fellowships were established at Harvard University in 1945 by a gift from Annie Reid Knox, wife of the late Frank Knox, who served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy in the 1940s. Frank Knox believed that strong ties between the United States and the British Commonwealth were essential to international peace. The Knox Memorial Fellowship program promotes this legacy through scholarly exchange, in part by providing fellowships to students from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom who wish to conduct graduate study at Harvard University.

Fellows are selected on the basis of academic excellence, strength of character, and potential for leadership in their field. Mrs. Knox expressed the hope that recipients of Knox Fellowships, after gaining knowledge and experience from study in the United States, would return to their native countries to become leaders in their chosen fields. Knox Fellowships include tuition and health insurance fees plus a stipend of at least $25,000, which is sufficient to cover the living expenses of a single fellow for a ten-month academic year.

The application deadline for the Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship is yet to be confirmed.

Selection Criteria
Knox Fellowships are open to men and women who: are citizens of Australia at the time of application and who are normally residing in Australia; AND have completed or will complete a first of higher degree at an Australian university; AND are studying for a first or higher degree and will graduate in the academic year 2011-2012; OR have completed a first or higher degree and graduated no earlier than 2007. Please note: persons who graduated before 2007 will not be eligible to apply; no application will be considered from any student already in the United States; Knox Fellowships are not awarded for undergraduate study or postdoctoral research; each Knox Fellowship applicant must also submit an Application for Admission directly to the Harvard graduate or professional school of his/her choice. Knox Fellowships are awarded only to those candidates that gain admission to Harvard as full-time degree-program students or – as permitted by certain Harvard schools – as non-degree Special Students or Visiting Fellows.

The Beryl Henderson Foundation and the Australian Federation of Graduate Women (AFGW) offer a grant of up to $1500 to assist in completion of a research project being undertaken by a female student or researcher in an Australian University. The purpose of the grant is to assist with practical aspects of research, such as board and lodging as intra-or interstate travel to consult library sources, or to consult with research collaborators.

The Beryl Henderson Memorial Grant is offered every second year to a female student or researcher in an Australian university to assist in the completion of a research project. The grant is made to honour the memory of Beryl Henderson (1897-1990), a leading women’s rights campaigner in Britain, Israel and later in Australia. Women students in any branch of learning may apply. Selection will be based on merit but research focusing on issues related to the rights and welfare of women and children will be viewed favourably.

China Scholarship 2014

The AustCham China Scholarship is an initiative of AustCham Beijing, developed in response to Australia’s growing economic, cultural and political relationship with China. The scholarship is designed for students who have a long term passion for strengthening this relationship through their business or cultural pursuits.

Scholarship Overview

The purpose of the AustCham China Scholarship is to provide a comprehensive career development platform for Australians with a passion for developing a career in China or with a China focus. For these individuals the programme has been tailored to provide maximum industry exposure, networking and learning opportunities on a professional, cultural and personal level. A typical candidate will be in their final year of studies (or have recently graduated) and have undertaken China focused work experience or academic studies.

The AustCham China Scholarship is not like a regular scholarship. Unlike most academic scholarships it does not provide a fixed monetary amount to fund tuition or research costs. As a recipient of the AustCham China Scholarship, one will receive the following:

A paid full time graduate traineeship for a minimum of 9 months in China
Mandarin language training
Return flights to China
A mentor
Full access to AustCham Beijing’s professional business network including sponsorship to attend industry events and seminars

The Rotary Peace Centers program is intended for individuals who have chosen a career in international relations, peace, and conflict resolution to pursue master studies. For example, individuals active in journalism, civil service, non-governmental organisations, diplomacy, mediation work, and the military may be strong candidates for the Rotary Peace Fellowships.

Fellowship Overview

Rotary Peace Fellows are leaders promoting national and international cooperation, peace, and the successful resolution of conflict throughout their lives, in their careers, and through service activities. Fellows can earn either a master’s degree in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies, conflict resolution, or a related field, or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict resolution. The Rotary Peace Fellowship provides funding for tuition and fees; room and board; round-trip transportation; and internship or field study expenses. Tenure is one to two years.

Selection Criteria
Fellows must have a demonstrated commitment (no less than 3 years’ experience) to peace and international understanding through their professional and academic achievements and/or professional and community service activities. Individuals who have been ‘in the line of fire’ helping resolve community or international conflicts make ideal candidates. Candidates must be proficient in more than 1 language, including the language of study, and be applying to attend a centre outside the home country. The award of the fellowship is dependent on acceptance to the degree program at the nominated centre.

The Bhati Family Travel Grant assists with airfares and travel expenses related to travelling to India for research purposes.

Grant Overview

This year-long grant will assist current Australian National University (ANU) students from any discipline to undertake research for which they need to travel to India. The aim of this grant is to create a better understanding and knowledge of Australia in India and/or a better understanding and knowledge of India in Australia. It is valued at $2,330 and is to be used to assist with airfares and travel expenses.

The successful candidate will be chosen based on the following:

Merit of application;
Proposed output of the research to be conducted in India;
Applicant’s academic record to date; and
Any other information made available to the Selection Committee.

Selection Criteria
Applicants must be able to demonstrate that travelling to India is vital to their research, and that the output of the research will contribute to a better understanding and knowledge of any aspect of Australia in India or vice versa. Australian Federation of Graduate Women (AFGW) is the national voice of graduate women working for the advancement and well-being of women and girls through education. They offer the AFGW Fellowship every second year to women students in any branch of learning.

Grant Overview

The AFGW Fellowship is available to women graduates who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia and are enrolled for a PhD degree by research in any Australian university. The funds are to be used for a specific project or purpose for PhD research in any field. The grant enables the successful applicant to fund a specific project for PhD research in any field. The AFGW Fellowship is for 6 to 12 months of work and is intended to enhance the original research on which a postgraduate applicant is already engaged. It is offered for the second and subsequent years of a doctoral program. First year doctoral students and applicants just beginning their research are not eligible.

Conditions of the Fellowship

Within six months of concluding the work undertaken under the tenure of the fellowhsip or grant, the recipient must submit a written report on the work accomplished. The financial assistance given by the AFGW must be acknowledged in any published material embodying the results of the work carried out.

Selection Criteria
The selection criteria for all AFGW scholarships comprises the following: academic merit; motivation for research, study or training; originality and feasibility of proposed plan of research, study or training; plan for which the Fellowship or Grant will be used; extent to which the specialized knowledge and skills to be acquired will further the applicant’s career; extent to which the specialised knowledge and skills to be acquired will be of benefit to the community; anticipated employment or activity after completion of the research, study or training; evidence that the applicant has achieved a satisfactory level of research or study progress by having successfully completed the first year of the post-first degree study or research. Scholarship University of Western Australia 2014

scholarshipIn conjunction with ASF, University of Western Australia (UWA) Business School is pleased to offer two (2) 20% scholarship for their MBA and Executive MBA Programs per year.

Program Overview

The Business School began its Master of Business Administration (MBA) program in 1973. It has produced more than 3000 management graduates, the vast majority of whom now hold leadership positions in Australia and internationally.

Their MBA is designed for those with a first degree who seek to enhance their management capabilities. The intent of their MBA is to expose students to the full range of management functional areas to provide them with the relevant skills and a conceptual framework which they may later reinforce with further on-the-job management experience.

A culture of ethical and sustainability awareness is embedded into their MBA program through our curriculum, research programs and Visiting Fellow in Ethics and Entrepreneurship. UWA’s aim is to raise the consciousness and capacity of students with respect to issues of ethics and sustainability, and to provide students with the tools that will enable them to address the type of values conflicts many of them will face in their careers.

Selection Criteria
The Scholarship is awarded jointly by ASF and UWA to applicants who are Australian citizens or permanent residents employed by a charitable not-for-profit organisation and whose completion of the program would, in ASF’s view, benefit their employing NFP organisation. Selection is based on the applicant meeting UWA entry requirements for the nominated program and written endorsement from the respective charitable organisation.

General Requirements:
  • Scholarships may only be awarded to new students.
  • A student may not receive multiple scholarships from the college. External scholarships are also encouraged.
  • Applicant must submit all required paperwork to the scholarship committee before the students begin taking courses.
  • To remain eligible for the scholarship, recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and at least 85% attendance.
  • All scholarships include specific eligibility criteria and may only be awarded after application, determination of eligibility, and approval by the scholarship committee.
  • Scholarship awards are limited and only available to those who qualify.

First Time Degree:
Applicant must be the first person in their immediate family (parents and siblings) to pursue a college degree and this must be the first degree program that the applicant has pursued.

Hispanic Student:
Applicant must be of Hispanic heritage, be fluent in Spanish and English, and be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
value: $3,000.

African American Student:
Applicant must be of African American heritage and be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Asian Student:
Applicant must be of Asian heritage and be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
value: $3,000.

Native American Student (Flagstaff campus only):
Applicant must be of Native American heritage and be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Single Parent Student:
Applicant must be the single custodial parent for a child under the age of 18 (proof required) and be presently single, divorced or widowed.

Professional Women’s:
Applicant must be female, 35 or older, and pursuing their first associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

Professional Men’s:
Applicant must be male, 35 or older, and pursuing their first associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

Leadership:
Applicants must have demonstrated leadership experience.

Future of Nursing:
Applicants must demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA process, express a desire to eventually go into the nursing profession, and enroll in one of the college’s healthcare programs.

Moms in Math:
Applicants must be female, have children under the age of 18, demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA process, and enroll in one of the college’s accounting programs.

Entrepreneur:
Applicants must enroll in one of the college’s business programs and submit a draft business plan.

Healthcare Provider:
Applicants must enroll in a healthcare program, demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA process, and submit a 500 word essay on why they want to enter the healthcare profession.

IT Professional:
Applicants must enroll in an IT program, demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA process, and earn at least one vendor certification before graduation.

Scholarships to UK Schools and Universities 2014

Every year, UK schools, colleges and universities attract thousands of students just like you. Many students who come to study in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales rely on help from family and friends to meet the costs of course fees and living expenses.

There are a number of bursaries and scholarships to help you fund your studies, so make sure you don’t miss out on any financial help that may be available to you.

Where do you start?

To find out whether you might be eligible for a scholarship or for financial grant support, start by asking the Ministry of Education in your own country.

Another good place to find out more is right here, on the Education UK website! You’ll find a scholarship tab in the Search box at the top right -hand side of every page. There are details of thousands of scholarships, so you can find those that are appropriate to your country of origin, level of study, subject, and whether you want to study at school, college or university.

And your local British Council office will have information about UK and country-specific award schemes.

A variety of scholarships and awards to help international students come to the UK to study are offered by UK government departments and the devolved administrations of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and a number of other UK organisations. While most of these awards tend to be for postgraduate-level study, many UK universities, schools and colleges also offer a range of awards for international undergraduate students.

When should you apply?

It’s important to apply in plenty of time; the deadline for many awards is often a whole academic year before the start of the course.

Boarding schools and colleges

Many boarding schools and colleges offer a range of bursaries and scholarships to help with the cost of fees. These are usually awarded to people with particularly strong academic or musical ability, or who are in financial need.

Scholarships and bursaries can cover all or part of the fees, depending on the school and the type of award.

To apply for a scholarship, gifted students are usually invited to take part in an open exam or test, normally held in the academic year before admission. Alternatively, examination papers can be sent to British Council offices in the student’s home country so they can sit the exams locally.

Higher education

Most higher education (HE) scholarships tend to be for postgraduate study, but many colleges and universities also offer a range of bursaries and scholarships for undergraduate students.

Many of these awards cover course fees (either a percentage each year, or sometimes the full tuition fee), while others also make a contribution to living expenses. They are usually awarded on the basis of academic achievement in your pre-university studies, or according to financial need.

Loyalty bursaries

Some UK universities offer a scholarship or ‘loyalty bursary’ to international students who remain at the university to take a degree after completing a previous course, such as a foundation programme, HND or Foundation Degree.

If you are following in the footsteps of one of your family members, such as your parent, your brother or sister who went to the same university, you may find you can apply for a family bursary.

Six Nations Police is accepting applications for three $1,000 bursary to students who have successfully completed their first year of police foundations.

The bursary is called the Six Nations Police Memorial Award and are presented in honour of the service’s three fallen officers – Const. A. Burning, Inspector T.W.T. Martin and Det/Const. Roger Smith. All three were dedicated officers who were committed to the safety of the Six Nations Community.

Recipients are chosen by three members of Six Nations Police including Chief Glen Lickers, a police officer, and civilian staff. The selection is based on the student’s recent transcripts, two police-related references and a brief essay on the student’s aspirations in policing.

The deadline for applications is June 15, 2013.
